OEM and ODM Decision Framework for Racket Buyers
The right model depends on how much of the product has already been defined. OEM is appropriate when the buyer owns a clear specification, artwork and performance target and wants a factory to industrialize and manufacture it. ODM is appropriate when the buyer wants to begin from an existing, tested platform and customize the commercial presentation or selected features.

What the Development Process Should Include
1. Product Brief and Feasibility
Define the target user, weight class, balance, shaft feel, grip, stringing requirement, colors, logo, packaging, market and target price tier. The factory should respond with a feasibility review and identify which requests use existing tooling and which require development.
2. Samples and Approval Gates
Separate appearance approval from functional approval. Confirm the structure and performance first, then approve colors, graphics and packaging. Record each approved version so that later comments do not overwrite earlier technical decisions.
3. Pilot and Mass Production
Where appropriate, use a pilot quantity to verify process stability, assembly, appearance and packing before the full run. The final purchase order should reference the approved sample, specification revision, artwork revision and inspection plan.
4. Change Control
Agree which changes require written buyer approval, including material source, layup, mold, key dimensions, colors, logos and packaging. This is important for both OEM and ODM because even an existing platform can change between orders if the specification is not locked.
A Hybrid Route Can Be Practical
Some buyers start with an ODM platform to test demand, then move successful models toward deeper OEM customization. This can reduce initial development risk while creating a path to stronger differentiation. The transition should be planned: identify which features remain standard, which become exclusive and who owns new tooling or design files.
