Pickleball Paddle Specifications Explained for OEM Buyers: Weight, Thickness, Grip and Shape
Start with the target customer
A beginner set, club training paddle and premium raw carbon paddle should not use the same specification brief. Before discussing price, define who will use the paddle: recreational players, schools, clubs, retailers, tournament players or online consumers.
The best OEM product is not always the most expensive spec. It is the spec that fits the buyer position, sales channel and expected reorder volume.
Weight range
Many commercial paddles sit around the midweight range because it balances power, speed and control. Lighter paddles can be easier for beginners and juniors. Heavier paddles can add stability and power but may feel slower in hand.
For OEM orders, request a finished weight range instead of one exact number. This gives the factory realistic tolerance while keeping the product consistent.
Core thickness: 13mm, 14mm and 16mm
Thickness strongly affects feel. A 13mm or 14mm paddle can feel faster and more responsive. A 16mm paddle is often chosen by players who want more control, stability and a softer touch.
For a first private label line, a 16mm raw carbon paddle is a strong hero product because it matches current buyer interest in control-oriented paddles. A 13mm or 14mm version can be positioned as a power or speed option.
Grip circumference and handle length
Grip size should fit the target market. A comfortable grip reduces complaints and makes the product feel more professional immediately. Handle length also matters: shorter handles can feel compact, while longer handles support two-handed backhands and elongated paddle positioning.
When sending a sample request, include grip circumference, handle length, grip color and whether the grip logo should be custom printed.
Shape and surface positioning
Widebody shapes are friendly for beginners and clubs because the sweet spot feels forgiving. Elongated shapes are common in performance lines where reach and leverage are part of the selling point. Surface choice matters too: fiberglass, carbon fiber and raw carbon each create a different price and marketing story.
